Email design best practices from 57 real emails

Patterns distilled from studying the best email designs of 2026. From welcome sequences to cart abandonment, here is what actually works.

01

Mirror your product in the email

Figma's welcome email feels like opening the app. Headspace uses soft shapes and calm colours that match the meditation experience. Your email should feel like using your product, not reading about it.

02

Restraint beats decoration

Apple, Aesop, and Nike prove that white space is a design choice, not empty space. Stripe's receipt uses a 472px width (not the standard 600px) for better readability. Strip to essentials, then strip again.

03

Own a colour, own the inbox

Absolut's wall-to-wall electric blue is unmistakable at scan speed. Pangaia draws earth tones from its materials. Collaborative Fund uses crumpled paper textures with bold red and yellow. Pick a palette and commit.

04

Voice matters more than visuals

theSkimm grew to 3.5M+ subscribers on voice alone. Liquid Death promises to "brainwash" subscribers. Superhuman's plain-text onboarding outperforms polished HTML. The strongest emails sound like a person, not a brand.

05

Turn transactions into brand moments

Webflow adds video tutorials to verification emails (the highest-opened emails you send). Haoma weaves tree-planting into order confirmations. Omsom makes every transactional email look different. Stop wasting guaranteed opens on bare-minimum templates.

06

Personalise with unexpected data

Lyka uses the pet's name, not the owner's. Beardbrand tells lapsed users their beard grew 1.5 inches. Blizzard writes in-character from a game NPC. Resy built a "Spotify Wrapped" for dining. The best personalisation goes beyond first names.

07

Scarcity and mystery drive clicks

Snif leads with "SOLD OUT" as the hero. Brooklinen uses a mystery-unwrapping GIF. Chubbies blurs unreleased products. Nike's deliberately sparse layout builds curiosity. What you leave out can be more powerful than what you put in.

08

Cart abandonment is a conversation

Tuft & Needle sends three emails addressing three different objections. Ugmonk sends a personal note from the founder asking for feedback. Liquor Loot opens with "Your cart is sobering up." Treat abandonment as dialogue, not a reminder.

Curated from studying emails by brands like Apple, Stripe, Patagonia, Glossier, and Dior. Informed by the work of email design practitioners including Ted Goas (Stack Overflow, Canva) and Remi Parmentier (HTeuMeuLeu), whose contributions to email development have shaped how the industry thinks about design.
